Sun Protection for Kids
It’s finally the time of year we’ve all been waiting for, summer is here! If you're like me you cannot wait to get out and enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. My family and I love the sun but unfortunately the sun doesn't share the same affinity for us. From a young age I have always had to protect myself from the sun and now it is essential for me to teach my children how to safely enjoy the sun and create regular habits to sustain as they grow up.
So, how do we protect our kids from the sun and harmful UVA/UVB rays?
My general rules for daily sun enjoyment are:
Use sunscreen! I CANNOT emphasize this enough! You need a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher especially in children, we use 50+ always. Your sunscreen should be broad spectrum and protect against UVA and UVB rays. I always choose sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. When it comes to kids, water resistant is better, because you never know when the water balloons might come out.
Routine is key! We start with a lotion sunscreen all over the body before we head out the door in the morning. Mom hack, use a makeup sponge to apply to the face! It ensures great coverage and safe application and the kids have fun doing it too. General rule of thumb is to reapply every 2-3 hours. I try and time this around snacks/meals and breaks in the day. Reapply before a meal/snack as this gives the sunscreen enough time to absorb and penetrate the skin layers before returning to activities. Always reapply after swimming - water will lessen the effects of the sunscreen no matter what. Don't take chances! When we are out and about I always carry a spray sunscreen and a face stick, great for reapplication on the run!
Wear sun protective clothing! My kids wear these amazing long sleeve swim tops which are very available in stores or online. We always wear hats and sunglasses when able to.
Take breaks! If your shadow is shorter than you are you should seek some shade or take a break inside. This is a fun game to play with your kids, especially the younger ones.
The best protection against sunburns, aging, leathery skin, moles, and skin cancers is PREVENTION! Teach your kids early to take care of their skin!
Set a good example for your kids, lead by example and make this an everyday routine. You and your skin will thank me later!
