Chemical Peels
-
Don’t get put off by the term chemical. Our highly qualified staff first gets to know you and your skin to recommend the safest treatment plan that delivers the best results.
Your chemical peel at our Newmarket clinic should feel relaxing and many patients find it quite enjoyable.
When you lay back to decompress in our chair, your skin is thoroughly cleansed with an agent that removes excess oils.
Depending on your skin concerns, one or more chemical solutions such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, retinoic acid, lactic acid or phenol may be gently applied onto the skin.
The application produces a separation and eventually peels off layers of skin (sometimes visible, but often invisible or “micro” peeling), enabling fresh, rejuvenated skin to the surface.
During the chemical peel, you may experience a warm to a hot sensation that lasts about 5-10 minutes, followed by a tingling sensation. A deeper peel may be more painful and require medication during or after the procedure.
-
Depending on the treatment, you may experience a mild to intense sunburn-like sensation after your session, but it should subside quickly.
Chemical peels make your epidermis extremely sensitive to sun exposure. Because you’ve removed the old layer of skin to reveal new skin, you must avoid direct sun exposure to prevent damaging your skin.
-
At Skintology, we always start our treatment plans with a comprehensive consultation to get to know you and your skin concerns before creating a unique program to suit your skin and budget.
During this consultation, we’ll discuss the specific peel and the chemicals we’ll use on your face to determine if anything could interfere with the treatment, such as acne medication, allergies, or if you’re prone to scarring.
Before your chemical peel appointment, you should avoid:
Any product or topical medication that contains retinol for at least 48 hours
Waxing or any hair removal products on your face
Bleaching your hair
Facial exfoliation (up to a week before)
We may also recommend topical creams or lotions to improve the treatment. In addition, we could prescribe an antiviral medication if you’re prone to blistering or cold sore breakouts. Pain killers may also be necessary depending on the procedure.
It’s also a good idea to arrange a ride home after medium or deep chemical peels, as you may be quite sensitive after your appointment.

The Common Side-Effects Of Chemical Peels Include:
Sensitivity to sun
Stinging/burning sensation
Redness
Swelling
However, these side-effects should subside within 48 hours.
Although very low, there is a risk of scarring, lightening of skin tone, or infection, but these risks only exist with more potent chemical peel treatments. To reduce the chances of these risks, a thorough consultation is critical.
Before any treatment, discuss your medical history, unusual scarring tendencies, previous sun damage to the face or recurring cold sores with your practitioner. This ensures the proper precautions can be taken to minimize risks and to help you achieve the best results.
-
This will depend on your skin condition and treatment plan that you will discuss with your practitioner.
Superficial chemical peels are more gentle and can be applied as often as every two to four weeks, depending on how your skin reacts to the peels and your desired results.
You don’t need to visit our office as frequently for deeper peels, as they usually produce more dramatic results that also last longer.
