Aesthetics & Wellness
Twenty years ago, aesthetic medicine procedures were only for the rich and famous. They were treatments us mere mortals would never have even considered.
Fast forward to today and the benefits of aesthetic medicine are no longer reserved for the financially superior. Procedures are now far more widely accepted, available and affordable.
Interestingly, the increase in acceptance of aesthetic medicine procedures has coincided with an increased focus on mental health and overall wellbeing.
People are beginning to fully appreciate the importance of looking good and feeling good.
What may surprise you now, is that the majority of patients that are being seen for aesthetic procedures are listing a psychological motivator as the reason for their visit. Fewer and fewer people are motivated by a specific physical outcome.
So what does that tell us?
Well, shockingly people who undergo aesthetic medicine procedures are not vain and self absorbed!!!
They are generally sensible, normal people with individual motivations and stories. They are generally not influenced by spousal or peer opinions. In summary, they are doing if for themselves!!
So, if the root cause of the issue they are seeing us for is psychological, shouldn’t we be treating it with mental health counselling?
This is where a skilled practitioner is key. An experienced physician will understand the difference between a patient who would benefit from treatment as it would improve their quality of life and a patient who needs long term counselling due to a problematic relationship with their physical appearance.
We all have insecurities with our physical appearance and we now all have the opportunity to work towards addressing them if they affect us in a significant way.
Our differences make us unique and beautiful. But sometimes that hairy mole on the end of your nose or the weird scar you got when you were 4 years old, they just have to go!
